Urbana Update #1
Enjoy the following dispatch from the Care of Creation team at Urbana09 in St. Louis… Please feel free to add your comments to this post to let us know you are with us in spirit… and if you are AT Urbana, come by booth #108 and say hello!
———————————————–
Although some of you are home and enjoying the Christmas season, in St. Louis, Missouri, things are a bit different. Why? Because about 13,000 college students from all over the world have descended on this city in the Midwestern USA to learn and think and pray about one thing — spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
It’s really an amazing thing if you think about it. These college students (who, by their very nature don’t tend to have a lot of disposable income) have raised their own funds to travel here — some in large groups on a bus and some by airline and some by carpool because they believe two things about the gospel — that it is important and that they, in some way want to participate in taking the gospel to the whole world.
As we have written in our past couple of letters, Care of Creation is blessed to be able to attend Urbana both as exhibitors and as speakers. We are partnering with Renewal, Au Sable, Eden Vigil and a few others because caring for creation is on a lot of people’s radar at Urbana. This makes sense since more and more, we are seeing environmental issues affecting the human condition and hindering the spread of the gospel.
I’ve just spent one day here and the energy that I see in these students (who by the way are going to be the ones running our government and our corporations and our churches in the next 10 years) is amazing. They are intensely seeking God’s will in their lives and asking how they can change this world. They are creative, energetic, polite, intelligent, pleasant to talk to and hard working. They ask good questions and are anxious to learn.
There is a huge potential for good in these people and they need our prayers.
This is the first Urbana that has had a set of seminars that are focused on creation care. Our first presentation is Monday with others following on the next three days of the conference. It’s also the first Urbana where creation care has a part as a major topic for discussion. The reason is because these students care about the subject.
It is our prayer over the next few days that we can not only share what we know but that we can learn a lot from the students we meet and interact with.
So far, we have driven here (from Madison), navigated the check-in and registration lines, unpacked and set up our booth and in three hours, had great conversations with about 20 students who have stopped at our booth because they are curious about what creation care is.
There is lots more to do and many, many more people to meet over the next few days. We sure could use your prayers as we work to build a network of interested students and as we present the Biblical view of creation care to the people who are attending the sessions.
More tomorrow about who we meet and how God is working in these student’s lives.
From all of us at Care of Creation we thank you for helping us be here at Urbana.
God Bless!
For the Care of Creation family,
Fred Gluck
